And no end in site. The state has now told me I have to apply at two places each week or I don't get any unemployment. I do want to work, but there is no one hiring around here, at least no one who is willing to hire someone who is 56.

NO One is hiring....
there is nothing...
( I am not sure where you are...but don't come to Ohio-it is horrendous...)
I guess the only thing I can say is that know this- you are in no way alone....
